TIP OF THE MONTH:

THE DREADED BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!!

Okay, it finally happened. A laptop, belonging to a friend, started displaying, what we tech-ees call 'the blue screen of death'. .

When that happens on a PC it usually means 1 of about 3 things in general. Either you've installed something that your system does not like, usually hardware OR
some hardware component is failing in your system OR some program or driver (as they're called) is doing something nasty to your system causing it to HANG or CRASH.... thus generating the dreaded BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH..

What's all this mean to you, the innocent user, who just wants things to work. For one thing, just knowing that such a thing can happen to you should be a BIG motivator to keep your precious photos, music, videos and documents backed up on a separate drive. BUT, and you knew that was coming, didn't you? But, when your computer gets to this point, it usually means you need to call in technical support to troubleshoot the problem.

Here are some things for you to ask yourself before asking for help. - What, if anything, was installed or changed recently on your system? Sometimes, just removing the new device can solve the problem. AND If you see a bunch of memory locations listed at the bottom of the 'blue screen of death', you may have memory failing..

In the most recent case of the 'blues' that was the problem. A bad peice of memory caused the system to crash. By pulling out the memory and replacing it with a new peice, the system came back up and never performed better. In fact, it seems the memory may have been having problems for sometime and the user just put up with it until they finally got the dreaded screen.

If you experience a 'blue screen of death' and lack advanced computer troubleshooting skills, it's time to call in someone who knows about the proper care and feeding of computers to perform some of that computer voodoo on your system to restore it to good health..
